City of Greater Geraldton hosts Emu in the Sky Gunnadoo Farm star-watching event

The City of Greater Geraldton has organised for the community to gather under the stars for National Reconciliation Week, in a reminder of our shared history and the importance of rebuilding a harmonious culture.

People should bring a chair, blanket and nibbles, hitch a ride and cruise over to Gunnadoo Farm for the sunset before a night of stargazing and storytelling.

As First Nations People share their stories, you can look out for the emu in the sky, making for a magical evening among a diverse community.

Hosted in conjunction with Astro Star Tours and other local organisations, the event will begin on Friday, June 3 at 5.45pm.

According to most Aboriginal legends, the emu in the sky is a spirit animal used by tribes to navigate the land, and dependent on the direction the emu faced indicated the best time to collect emu eggs.

Established in 2001, Reconciliation Australia is an independent, not-for-profit organisation building trust between Australian, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and influencing organisations for a united and equitable country.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said National Reconciliation Week was about coming together as one and healing the nation’s wounds.

“Spending a night under the stars learning stories and lessons from our First Nations people is a wonderful way to move forward with that,” Mr Van Styn said.

“It will make for a magical evening and I look forward to experiencing it with the community.”
