Australian actor Dan Wyllie has been charged with domestic violence offences after an alleged assault in Sydney's eastern suburbs.

The 50-year-old was arrested by police on Saturday after an investigation into the alleged incident at a Woollahra home in March, a NSW Police spokesman told AAP on Monday.

Wyllie, whose credits include Underbelly and SeaChange, has been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and common assault.

Police also applied for an apprehended violence order against him to protect his partner, director Shannon Murphy.

Wyllie was granted conditional bail to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday.

The versatile Australian actor has appeared in a range of Australian productions including TV series Love My Way, Puberty Blues and web series No Activity.

One of his earliest credits came as Cackles in 1992's Romper Stomper, starring Russell Crowe, while Wyllie also played a supporting role in Muriel's Wedding in 1994 as the protagonist's rugby league-dreaming brother Perry.

In the early 2010s, he voiced B2 on Bananas in Pyjamas and played police detective Frederick Piggott in the Underbelly series centred on 1920s gangster Joseph "Squizzy" Taylor.

More recently, he was erratic pub owner Ben Russo in Nine's reboot of legal drama SeaChange, starring Sigrid Thornton and John Howard.
