DFES photographers Evan Collins and Morten Boe reveal what it’s like to capture bushfires on the frontline

Standing metres from a wall of flames and armed with a camera instead of a hose, two firefighters have described being in the thick of the “unstoppable” Wooloroo blaze. Evan Collins, a career firefighter of nearly 40 years, believes the old adage “a picture tells a thousand words” best describes the purpose of his role as an incident photographer. “We bring the epicentre of the fire right into people’s living rooms,” he said. “You can write a thousand words warning people of the danger — it just won’t register sometimes. But you show them one image of the intensity of the fire and it clicks.” While hundreds of fellow firefighters battled the Wooroloo blaze last month, Mr Collins was part of a small team of fireys tasked with documenting the devastation and danger. The fire started on a hot Monday afternoon on February 1, and by the end of that day it had torn through nearly 20km and destroyed 80 per cent of the Tilden Park subdivision. That night, Mr Collins captured an image that would feature in The New York times the following day. Drenched in pink neon hues, the photo shows four firefighters standing in front of a road, looking into a yellow glow of the fire coming towards them through the trees. “It was too dangerous to go into it so the crews were standing by waiting for the fire to come out to the edge of the road before they could tackle it,” the 62-year-old said. “It roars — it’s like a jet engine screaming. It certainly lets you know it’s coming. It took minutes (for the fire) to reach us. The crews were in no doubt at that point this was a serious and significant fire.” By Tuesday morning, the fire had spread to Brigadoon. Mr Collins was paired with two firefighters trying to protect a property. “They had one truck, very limited water and they were protecting a ... semi-trailer, which is the truck you see the firefighter crouching under, a couple of four-wheel-drives and a house. “Imagine if you collect 500 hair dryers, taped them all together and put them on the highest heat and had them blasting towards you,” he said. “It was so hot that you actually had to get behind that truck. “Those two guys ... their determination and their skill set to be able to protect that property and those assets was just phenomenal.” But while that property was saved, others around it had burned. Mr Collins describes going back to the scorched sites and not be saved as returning to a battle-ground after a war. “Firefighters are like surgeons — if a doctor lost somebody on an operating theatre table, they’re devastated. We are the same. We just don’t want to lose anything.” Fremantle firefighter Morten Boe, who has been involved in the Department of Fire and Emergency Services incident photography since its inception about 2012, took photos while following six fire trucks assigned to protect the Eagles Nest property in Gidgegannup. “There was five minutes of furious action as the fire reached the property,” the 56-year-old said. “The wind tripled in intensity and everything around us was ablaze. Embers were flying past us with grass and trees suddenly alight 50m in front of the fire.After five days of hell, the heavens opened. Mr Boe captured a moment relief literally pouring over the faces of several dozen firefighters. “Down came the rains and I was fortunate enough to be passing a group of career and volunteer firefighters and their appliances,” he said. A special sort of smell hung in the air, according to Mr Boe, with the rain drawing out the musky smoke emanating from the ground and everything that the fire had touched. “This was the opportunity to capture an image of ‘hope’ for what had been a very tough time for so many,” he said. “When you see mother nature at that stage ... the pure kilojoule energy all around, no amount of water is going to stop that ... you literally can’t stop it. I think the incredible part for me was that no lives were lost.” “That particular area — it was catastrophic, you were in a literally like a tsunami and a tornado in one on fire.” Both firefighters agreed that no ordinary photographer could do what they do. “You cannot have anyone other than a trainer firefighter (in the danger zone),” Mr Collins said. “You’ve got one eye on the action and your other eye on your escape route. “The shot of Dave Ellis, for example, kneeling in front of the house ... they’re the moments that every photographer would love to be at ... those moments present themselves rarely ... they’re raw and they’re powerful.”
