A volcanic eruption near Jakarta has disrupted some Australian travellers, with authorities warning that ash clouds are affecting operations at major airports.

Mount Anak Krakatau, near Lampung, erupted early on Sunday, sending volcanic ash drifting across parts of the Indonesian capital and the southern tip of Sumatra island.

Hundreds of flights have been affected, including at least six in and out of Perth Airport.

Australia’s Smart Traveller website has advised travellers that airports in affected areas could close at short notice, with flights delayed or cancelled.

“Monitor your flight status and check with your airline or travel provider before travelling,” it said.

“Volcanic ash may affect air quality. People with asthma or other respiratory conditions should take extra care and follow health advice from local authorities.”

All flights were temporarily cancelled at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.

Indonesia’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation said it was closely monitoring the eruption’s impact on air travel and coordinating with airlines, airport operators, air navigation services and the meteorology agency.
