Residents and ocean-goers have been warned about a fresh whale carcass near Hamelin Bay.

The whale carcass was reported by Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions Parks and Wildlife officers on Saturday morning, April 20.

The carcass was found about 1km north of the boat ramp, triggering an immediate alert to beach users.

A spokesperson said the carcass could attract sharks coming close to shore along the coast.

While whale carcasses weren’t uncommon, DBCA and Department of Fisheries representatives urged caution.

DBCA planned to remove the carcass, and in the meantime had closed the beach.

However, no estimate was offered for when the remains would be taken off-site and buried.

Authorities urged visitors to use the SharkSmart app to keep aware of any alerts in the area.
