Perth Zoo has welcomed a new addition to its breeding program of the endangered Goodfellow’s tree kangaroo.

New male on the block, Taro, arrived from Victoria recently and will join the zoo’s existing population and keepers hope he will one day help add to it.

The six-year-old had already taken kindly to his young neighbour, female tree kangaroo Muku, and the feeling seems mutual.

“Muku is our youngest female tree kangaroo, and she’s shown interest in Taro since he arrived,” fauna keeper Bronte Winterbottom said.

“We’ve observed both Taro and Muku watching and sniffing each other through their habitats, which are encouraging behaviours as they become familiar with one another.”

If their relationship continues to blossom, the pair will be introduced for breeding in the future, zoo staff said.

In the meantime, Taro was happily making himself at home.

“Like all our new arrivals, we’ve been letting Taro lead the way. Working on his terms has given him the time and space he needs to get comfortable,” Ms Winterbottom said.

“Every day we’re seeing him become more confident and curious, and his personality is really starting to shine through.”
