Middleton Beach had an unexpected visitor over the weekend, with a seal making itself at home on the sand before sliding back into the water.

The seal was spotted ashore at the popular Albany beach, giving beachgoers a memorable wildlife encounter.

A Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions spokesperson said the seal had since moved on and there was no cause for concern.

“DBCA is aware of reports that a seal came ashore on Middleton Beach over the weekend and has since moved on,” they said.

“It is common for seals to come ashore in the area at this time of year to rest.”

While seals can attract plenty of attention when they come ashore, the DBCA urged people to give them plenty of space and to avoid approaching or handling them.

DBCA also reminded the public that anyone who spots sick or dead birds or marine mammals should avoid handling the animal and record the sighting and take photos or videos where possible.
