The Albany Maritime Festival will be making waves again this year when the city-wide event returns in July.

The City of Albany has secured nearly $90,000 in State and Federal government funding to bring the festival to the south coast from July 2-17.

The 2022 festival is set to feature a new multi-media art exhibition at the Albany Entertainment Centre inspired by Albany oysters and all things green and blue.

The G&B Exhibition aims to provide opportunities to emerging Menang Noongar artists to collaborate with established local artists to explore the aquatic theme.

The City will also partner with performing arts organisation Breaksea to deliver community art programs inspired by the Albany coast titled From the Shadows and into the Light.

The organisation will work with the community to create a series of lanterns and puppetry workshops which will be showcased during the festival.

Local food venues have also jumped on board with the new Maritime Menu Map to take visitors and locals on a culinary adventure across the City.

Kids and parents can discover the maritime history of Albany on the Maritime Treasure Trail, ticking off stops along the way on their Maritime Passports.

City of Albany community relations manager Louise Paterson said the funding would enable the City to deliver a city-wide program of events throughout the July school holidays.

“The Maritime Festival is all about celebrating our City’s cultural and maritime history, including that of our Menang Noongar people who have strong links to the sea dating back thousands of years,” she said.

“This funding will enable us to expand on the success of last year’s Festival with a diverse arts and culture program at venues around town.”
