Albany Athletics Club come home with big medal haul from Masters State Championships

Competitors from the Albany Athletics Club have returned with a swag of medals from the recent Masters State Championships at the Em Clark Athletic Stadium in Perth.

A total of eight athletes helped the small club bring home 21 gold medals, 11 silvers and two bronze along with many personal bests from the championships held on March 27 and 28.

Brenda Painter and Kathleen Hannig led the way for the Albany competitors coming home with five gold medals each.

Hannig produced a remarkable achievement at the championships, breaking the State record in the W80 1500m race as she took first place while also taking away gold in the W80 in the 10km race.

She was the only 80-year-old athlete to run the 10km at State level.

Hannig also won gold in W80 discuss, shotput and javelin to go along with a silver medal in the 60m race.

Painter won gold in W75 Pentathlon along with the 100m, 200m, long jump and triple jump.

She also won two silver medals and one bronze medal to cap a superb weekend.

Veteran athlete Peter Muller won three gold medals while Stuart Walker, Barb Wilson, Callum Dowell, Crystal Bairstow won two gold medals each.

Muller earned gold in the M80 discus, javelin and shotput.

Walker took home gold in the M55 100m and 200m races while also winning two silver medals.

Wilson received four silver medals on top of her two gold medals in W65 triple jump and W65 javelin.

Dowell won gold in the M30 800m and 1500m races.

Bairstow proved too strong in the W40 400m race and 1500m event.

Fellow local competitor Leonie Taylor came away with two silver medals and a bronze.
