Nom Nom
If your social media is filling up with friends’ holiday adventures at Spanish wines bar or long-table lunches in Italy, then this food festival might help stave off the winter blues. From July 2 to August 9, it features special events at venues across Leederville, from oyster shucking masterclasses with Jerry Fraser at Evergreens (July 26, August 2) to a Leeuwin Estate luncheon at The Garden with Art Series wine pairings (July 19), and a Croatian Nights event at Servo (July 23). See nomnomfestival.com.au for the full program.
Sisa Studio
This company, founded by Perth’s Vinisha Mulani late last year, re-purposes deadstock yarn into small-batch rugs in collaboration with female artists — and its debut collection is out now. The first batch features the work of Claire Ritchie and is described as “a joyful meeting of colour, texture and form”. Mulani works with a premium carpet factory in Bandung, Indonesia, to turn its more than 20 tonnes of leftover pure New Zealand wool into rugs, hand-tufted by locals in the same city. Sisa means remainder or remnant in Bahasa. The studio also sells its own range, designed by Mulani. Prices start from $799. See sisa-studio.com.
Wayfinder
Wayfinder is stepping up its food game, appointing acclaimed chef Brendan Pratt to oversee both its wine bar and restaurant in Dunsborough and the August opening of its winery and farm restaurant in Cowaramup. Pratt, who has been head chef at Vasse Felix and culinary director at Parker Group (The Royal, Fleur, The Standard and more), will build a seasonal, changing menu around the estate’s organic garden, lamb, honey and eggs from the farm, and the winery’s vinos. Perth Women’s International Jazz Festival
The main show for this event’s headline act — internationally acclaimed bassist and singer Nicki Parrott — sold out, but you can still catch her at the festival’s grand finale Vocal Summit. Parrott, who hails from NSW, is best known for her 11-year tenure with the Les Paul Trio at New York’s Irridium Jazz Club, where she performed with artists including Paul McCartney and Slash. She’ll play The Ellington on June 28, along with Victoria Newton, who heads the WAAPA jazz vocal program, highly respected Perth performer and educator Penny King, and rising star Sofie Kerr.
