Mel Gibson is under fire for mocking an American Sign Language interpreter at a fan event in Toronto, Canada over the weekend.

The Hollywood star was captured on video walking onstage waving at attendees before seemingly mocking a woman signing in front of him and pointing to the crowd.

The footage has since exploded, with social media users blasting the 70-year-old for his bizarre behaviour.

“This choice is bonkers to me. . . The interpreter is just doing their job. What dysfunction causes a brain to need to be casually cruel for no reason,” one person wrote on X.

Others dubbed the Sydney raised star’s behaviour as “despicable” and “gross”, with one person going so far as to say: “He just can’t stop being a cruel a****** who never takes responsibility for his raging a********”.

In the aftermath of the incident, one user revealed he had chosen not to attend the event because of Gibson’s appearance, stating: “Mel Gibson being a guest was one of the main reasons why I chose not to attend Fan Expo this year.”

In a statement shared with news.com.au on Monday, Gibson apologised and said: “Sometimes when you get pushed out on a stage in a spotlight your mind is all over the place, and sometimes spontaneous thoughtless idiocy is displayed.”

He added, “There was no intended maliciousness attached, and I certainly apologise to anyone who was upset by it.”

It’s not the first time the Oscar winner, has come under fire with a decades-long history of controversial remarks.

In 2006 the Braveheart star went on an antisemitic rant during his arrest for drunk driving, later insisting he was “truly sorry” about the “out of control” moment.

“I have battled with the disease of alcoholism for all of my adult life and profoundly regret my horrific relapse,” Gibson said at the time.

A few years later, Gibson battled allegations of homophobia and antisemitism after Winona Ryder alleged he made inappropriate comments to her and her friend at a star-studded bash.
