A man is in a serious condition after his legs became trapped in a meat auger at a NSW abattoir for more than two hours.

Emergency services arrived at the horrific scene in Young, in the state’s southwest, about 9.30am on Wednesday.

NSW Ambulance said the man, aged in his 30s, was caught in machinery raised on a platform about five metres off the ground.

The man suffered major injuries to both legs and was freed by paramedics and firefighters.

He was intubated and placed in an induced coma before being flown to Canberra Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Inspector Stephen Pollard from the ambulance service said the man’s colleagues stayed by his side throughout the ordeal, which lasted 2½ hours.

“It must have been really hard for the patient who was in a fair bit of pain before paramedics arrived. We gave him some relief and then began the task of getting him free,” he said.

“It was a particularly delicate and protracted incident to free the man from the machinery, which was about five metres off the ground on a platform.

“Ambulance crews worked closely with Fire and Rescue NSW to get him out safely.

“He was stuck for a long time but his colleagues were there with him throughout providing physical and mental support. They did a great job.”

Two ambulance crews responded as well as the Toll ambulance rescue helicopter with a critical care paramedic and doctor on-board.

NSW Police said emergency services were called to the site on Scenic Rd following reports of a workplace incident.

SafeWork NSW has been notified of the incident.
